Mumbai: India defeated Australia by six runs in the first T20 International at Wankhede Stadium on Friday night, taking a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. Batting first, Shubman Gill’s side scored 184 for seven and then restricted Australia to 178 for nine. Young fast bowler Mayank Yadav was the star of the match with three wickets for 24 runs in four overs and was named Player of the Match. After winning the toss, India chose to bat first. The pitch had some pace early on but became easier for batting as the innings progressed. India’s openers could not build a big partnership. Ruturaj Gaikwad played a few attractive shots before falling for 18, while Shubman Gill made 22. The middle order needed to step up and Tilak Varma and Rinku Singh did exactly that. Tilak scored 38 off 34 balls, while Rinku smashed 48 off 29 deliveries. The pair added 71 runs for the third wicket and gave India momentum. Jitesh Sharma made 26 and Axar Patel contributed 22 as India reached a competitive total. Adam Zampa and Nathan Ellis took two wickets each for Australia. Chasing 185, Australia started aggressively through Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh. The opening pair added 34 runs in the first three overs before Arshdeep Singh dismissed Head. Marsh made 31 but fell to Mayank Yadav’s pace. Josh Inglis top-scored with 42, while Glenn Maxwell made 19. Ravi Bishnoi and Washington Sundar kept the middle overs tight. Australia needed 52 runs from the last five overs, and Tim David kept the chase alive with 31. However, Mayank struck twice in the 17th over, dismissing David and bowling Matthew Wade. Arshdeep then delivered crucial yorkers in the 19th over. Australia needed 14 from the final over but could manage only seven runs. India captain Shubman Gill praised the young bowlers for handling pressure well. He said the score of 184 was slightly under par at Wankhede, but the bowlers and fielders made a superb comeback. Australia captain Mitchell Marsh admitted that his team failed to hit big shots in the middle overs and losing wickets at the death proved decisive. He also praised the pace and accuracy of India’s fast bowlers. India’s bowling balance was the biggest reason for the win. Arshdeep picked up important wickets at the start and in the death overs, while Mayank’s raw pace troubled Australian batters. Bishnoi used turn and bounce effectively, and Axar and Washington were economical. India’s fielding was also sharp. Tilak took a fine catch in the deep, and Rinku saved important runs near the boundary. Statistically, India scored 52 runs in the last five overs, while Australia managed 47 in the same phase. India hit eight sixes and 12 fours. Rinku’s strike rate of around 165 proved crucial. For Australia, Inglis was the top scorer, but the team could hit only six sixes, which was not enough for a big chase. The second T20I will be played in Nagpur, where the pitch may be slower. Both teams are expected to make strategic adjustments. India will look to maintain momentum, while Australia will aim to level the series. The thrilling finish has raised expectations for the next match.
