Empty Data, Filled Templates: An Extraction-Failure Warning for Esports Newsrooms
An automated esports analysis pipeline failed at its very first stage, returning an output with no headline, no source, no article type and zero information points — not even the name of the game. According to the analysis report, this is a failed extraction rather than a thin article, and the report deliberately refused to fill its nine analytical dimensions with invented players, rosters, patch numbers, prize pools, contract values or ban durations. Every dimension is marked 'insufficient information'. The report's central methodological point is the distinction between 'no risk identified' and 'no information': the overall risk rating is recorded as indeterminate, never low, because silence is not evidence of solvency — particularly on unpaid wages, match-fixing and injury. It warns that a filled template can mislead skim-readers into assuming the subject is clean, when in fact the input was silent rather than verified. The report reframes itself as a re-extraction specification, listing the minimum inputs each dimension requires: game title as a hard prerequisite (esports templates are not portable across titles), patch number and predecessor, whether the event runs on a tournament server or live build, the article's type and author intent, full rosters with roles and contract dates, international results over two to three seasons, any disclosed financial figure, and the governing body with jurisdiction. It also offers the hypothesis that Stage-1 never received article body text at all — possible causes include fetch failure, paywall or anti-scraping blocking, or non-text input such as video or image, which would require transcription or OCR before retries can succeed. Four risk warnings are issued: downstream hallucination, misreading of silent absence, category error on re-run if a competitive lens is applied to what may be a business or governance story, and title-mixing if partial entity data arrives. All four information-value ratings — competitive, industry, timeliness and reference — are scored at one out of five. The practical recommendation is to halt the pipeline, not publish Stage-2 output as substantive analysis, and re-run Stage-1 against the raw source.
