Sri Lanka opened their ACC Men’s U19 Asia Cup 2026 campaign with a commanding nine-wicket victory over Malaysia at the Al Amerat Cricket Ground in Oman. In a 50-over match, Sri Lanka bowled Malaysia out for 88 in 28.1 overs and then chased the target in 13.5 overs, finishing on 89/1 with 217 balls to spare. Kaushika Kumarasinghe was named Player of the Match for his outstanding 5/30 spell, while Rehan Peiris made an unbeaten 54 off 45 balls and Senuja Wekunagoda remained not out on 30 off 35. The win was as comprehensive as it gets in 50-over cricket and underlined the gap between the two sides.
Sri Lanka won the toss and put Malaysia in to bat at a neutral venue. The decision worked perfectly, but the margin was too large to be explained by the toss alone. Malaysia’s innings revolved around Syamil Aqil, who made 51 of his team’s 88 runs — 58 percent of the total. His innings included seven fours and two sixes, meaning 40 of his 51 runs came in boundaries. He managed only 11 runs off 44 balls in non-boundary scoring, showing both his aggression and his reliance on risky shots. Malaysia were 76/5 at 19.1 overs when Aqil was at the crease, but after he was bowled on the first ball of the 20th over, the innings collapsed. They lost five wickets for just 12 runs in the next 54 balls, dropping from a run rate of 3.13 to 1.33, and were all out for 88.
Kumarasinghe’s five-wicket haul was the centrepiece of Sri Lanka’s bowling effort. He took half of Malaysia’s ten wickets and broke the back of the innings. Although the number of overs he bowled was not stated, his impact was clear: he created pressure and prevented Malaysia from building partnerships. Malaysia never reached the death overs, which exposed the fragility of their batting. Sri Lanka’s chase had a brief scare when captain and opener Viran Chamuditha was dismissed for a three-ball duck, leaving the score at 0/1. But Peiris and Wekunagoda steadied the innings with an unbroken 89-run partnership. Peiris struck at 120 and made 34 of his 54 runs in boundaries, while Wekunagoda played the supporting role with 30 off 35. Sri Lanka reached 89/1 in 83 balls, exactly matching the 217 balls remaining.
The result was not a fluke. A nine-wicket win with more than 43 overs unused cannot be manufactured by toss, weather or umpiring. It reflected a genuine difference in quality. Malaysia’s collapse in a single 54-ball passage decided the match, and Aqil’s dismissal triggered it. Sri Lanka’s chase was not flawless because Chamuditha’s early dismissal exposed a top-order question, but the target was too small for that to matter. The 50-over format was confirmed by the ball count: 300 minus 217 equals 83 balls, or 13.5 overs. Malaysia’s innings ended at 28.1 overs, meaning they never reached the death phase. Al Amerat is generally regarded as a slow, low-bounce venue, but Malaysia’s batting quality was the bigger factor in their collapse.
For Sri Lanka, this is a strong start that boosts confidence and net run rate. Kumarasinghe’s five-wicket haul, Peiris’s unbeaten half-century and Wekunagoda’s calm finish are encouraging signs. For Malaysia, the lesson is clear: they need more support for Aqil and better resistance under pressure. This is still U19 cricket, so one match should not lead to sweeping conclusions about any player’s future. But as a tournament opener, Sri Lanka sent a clear message that they will be a tough side to beat.
